March Comes in Like a Lion Dub Review

Sangatsu no Lion (TV Series 2016–2018) Poster

Beautiful, Heartwarming Blitheness

This is a slice of life anime is with themes of sports, romance and comedy. Plot line covers the coming of age tale of a 17 years Shogi (Japanese Chess) player chosen Rai. Every bit is with most slice of life animation, the storytelling is slow just full of emotions. As well having a mature story information technology'southward got i of the best animation I accept come across, it works perfectly with the storytelling, bring out the feelings of the characters. The audio and music are as well great and the characters amid the most complex ones I take seen in an animation.

Every bit of now I have watched the first two seasons, showtime season in dubbed and the 2d in subbed and have loved them both, although I prefer the dubbed version. Actually looking forrad to see what comes next for Rai.

Outset taking notes, Information technology'll teach you how to alive

I can't preach enough how much this is 1 of the best character driven stories to exist made in the modernistic era. Function of it is credit of the source cloth, for certain, the mangaka who made information technology is extremely sensible and wrote information technology beautifully. Merely studio Shaft has shown us how to adapt things well, get-go with the Monogatari Series and now with Sangatsu no Lion. There'due south enough good stuff here for me to make a book virtually every episode, merely I must say that one thing in detail just made me lose my marbles, and I'yard talking about the terminal episode from the 2nd season. I won't spoil anything here, and so all I can say is: It has the best prologue to a last episode that was ever made. And I'thousand not exagerating just to create shock value, I genuinely believe information technology and extend this to any other kind of episodic show, be it anime, live activity, series, annihilation. If, for some reason, you never watched this anime, practise it right now. Also, don't call up I hyped it too much with all I just said, information technology will surprise y'all with everything else before getting there.

One of the best "slice of life" anime

Making a truly keen piece of life anime is non easy, while other genres like shounen or seinen tin can rely on activity to make their stories more entertaining, the quality of a piece of life show depends almost simply on the strength of their characters. Fortunately there are some truly great shows of this genre and March comes in like a king of beasts(which a very bad translation of "three-gatsu no Lion") is definitely ane of the all-time shows of this genre. The outset flavor of the show centers more on information technology'southward protagonist which is a 17 twelvemonth onetime shogi professional player chosen Rei Kiriyama. If an anime about shogi might seem similar a boring idea don't worry because shogi is merely used equally a tool to tell the story of Rei and the people around him. This is more a coming of age story that deals with themes like low and lonelines than merely been a show about shogi. The character development of Rei throught both seasons of the evidence is one of the strongest points of the anime, just is not it's well-nigh impressive. This anime shines even more than when we become into specific story arcs from other characters which are in my opinion some of the best pieces of storytelling I take ever seen in any anime. The mangaka who created the original story in which this anime is based on has a incredible power to introduce a new character and immediately requite us a reason to care about him/her thanks to the fantastic character development that this mangaka gives to the characters. Autonomously from the great storytelling and grapheme evolution that this testify has, this anime is very well directed. The themes of show are very well represented thanks to the beautiful art and blitheness that this testify has. The soundtrack is as well very appropiate for this type of story. Overall, this a very well directed and very well animated story about people just dealing with their issues and doing their best to continue living. Definitely ane of the best slice of life anime ever produced.

Heart-wrenching yet heartwarming!

Alert: Spoilers

This anime series gives me a mixture feelings of sadness and pleasure and delight. I can't become enough of all the bits and pieces on mundane routines that harmoniously spin effectually. But thanks to the eccentricity of the supporting characters, they bring joy and keep the mood balance. Aye! In that location are a lot of bubbly characters to love here, especially the Kawamoto family.

I like how the graphic symbol of Rei is sculpted. He is good at shogi, simply not the greatest. It gives him the time to struggle and grow. And his journeying is ane amazing story to follow.

The story line is executed at a slow-paced. The construction of the scenes is succinct with a series of flashbacks entangled on the dot. A few scenes that I like are the long walks in the familiar neighborhood. I personally like the role of Rei's serene walks, particularly when he seems to condone the world revolving around him. I would like to recollect that most of the time, Rei finds comfort in a coating of despondency that clouded him for some reasons.

Let's not forget the soundtracks. Most scenes (I think) are modestly graced with in tempo instrumental piano pieces. I genuinely find them rich and piercing. I think I have even heard a lovely French track.

The blitheness, characters, story line and the music are all equally wonderful. Higher up all else, this series is life-affirming.

The Best Slice of Life Anime?

Firstly this is one of the almost underrated anime I take always come up beyond. Not even the anime blogs that I follow take mentioned about this gem. Information technology might be that since the primary atomic number 82 is a Shogi player and the game is not that popular across the globe. But don't allow that obstruct you from having a go at this. There are ii seasons released as of now and the story is still running in the Manga. The 1st flavor starts off the story introducing us with broad variety of characters, all pretty well structured. Nosotros gradually go to know the past and present of Rei Kiriyama and his struggles to lead a life as a pro Shogi histrion. His relationship with the three Kawamoto sisters are thing to gaze upon. The 2d season gets deeply into the lives of all the characters and shows how each are overcoming their difficulties to lead a happy life. Specially Hinata's story is the near gripping one as she encounters hardships at school. The dialogues are outstanding in this anime. I would suggest to lookout the English dubbed version. They have done a wonderful job in retaining the core emotions in every scene. Overall this anime sure comes into my summit five favourite anime of all fourth dimension.

Didn't feel this anime was that bang-up...

I felt the story was rather thrown in there past being tedious and become rather boring as I kept watching it. I too felt the comedy in it didn't need to exist added because the jokes weren't that funny and the characters weren't that likeable either...

Yeah 2 episodes is plenty for me to go distracted with another meliorate anime to go on me occupied...

Why I have a honey/hate relationship with this show (And drama anime in general)

Warning: Spoilers

Season 1:

I have a love/hate relationship with drama anime. Maybe not the genre, simply a theme I see in most of them. Cause I have noticed that I can kind of separate drama shows into two parts. Ones that don't have jokes, and those who do. Maybe this can seem kind of weird, but I have some examples. We have shows like "A Silent Vocalisation", "Darling in the Franxx" and (Maybe) "Violet Evergarden". All of these have jokes in them, but they are far and few between. I could tell that they didn't want to make a comedic testify. But then we have shows similar "Your Lie in April" and "Anohana", who take a lot of jokes. And while it isn't necessarily bad to have jokes in a drama bear witness, I notice that most jokes in these shows don't fit well with the dramatic aspects. And unfortunately, "March Comes in like a Lion" is 1 of those show.

March comes in like a lion, directed by Akiyuki Shinbou who also directed Bakemonogatari, other Monogatari seasons and Nisekoi, is a really good show. It has some actually adept music and a pretty unique art manner. But unfortunately, I plant some parts of it to be boring (There, I said information technology). When the testify is really serious or beautiful, it is actually enjoyable to picket. The Kawamoto family unit's interactions were really enjoyable. Making food or only talking, it was all actually fun. And similarly, the more psychological parts of the evidence were also really enjoyable. We go to see how sad and agape Rei is and how he realizes that when he finds a place he tin can be happy. It is probably my favorite role since it is where Kai Shimada, my favorite character in the serial, gets a lot more evolution.

But whenever the shows practise something different, I merely found it tiresome. There were entire scenes that were "comedic". But I didn't observe it to be funny, and it just dragged the evidence. At least that's how I felt.

But at the end of the 24-hour interval, I really liked the evidence. Except for some of the flaws I had (Too many comedic scenes, some cheesy blitheness, too much "proverb what you think", some underdeveloped characters and parts where I wanted it to exist more subtle) information technology was a very high-quality prove. It has a pretty unique fine art style, the music is great, some very memorable characters and a fantastic ending IMO.

So even though I didn't find it to be a masterpiece like many people retrieve (Which is fine, no 1's opinion is worth more than someone else'south), I tin understand why it is such a loved bear witness. I'm going to give this show a weak 8/10

Good 1st Season, Bad 2nd Season

Alarm: Spoilers

1st Season Review:

I have been fugitive this anime for similar ii years now, thinking information technology was "Oh... another silly melodrama". So, I waited until the anime was finished airing, then I checked out a few clips of information technology and idea maybe it wouldn't be as bad equally I thought. It turns out in some ways, I was right, at that place were a couple of overemotional parts merely the anime in full general was fairly decent. I was worried most how the story would turn out from the beginning.

The story isn't anything really special. It'southward almost this orphaned shogi player with a traumatic family background and he struggles with socializing and depression. It tends to be too ho-hum-paced and struggles with inconsistent pacing. The first like x episodes of the serial has Rei bonding with these three girls named Akari, Hinata, and Momo, simply the rest of the series is about shogi and Rei withdraws from the girls more. Ane of the adept things about the series is Rei's chains with the three girls, the girls were my favorite graphic symbol but in the teen episodes, the series throws that out the window and the girls are reduced to side characters. Add together in a little excessive drama just we'll get to that with the characters.

The show mainly focuses on Rei and to a lesser extent, Akari, Hinata, and Momo (earlier the teen episodes, that is). After that, the prove starts focusing more on Rei'south human relationship with the secondary characters who didn't go much screentime during Rei'due south bondage with the girls. Those are Rei's family unit and his shogi associates. Rei is an okay grapheme, it took me a lot of time for him to grow on me. He's a tranquility grapheme who struggles with depression which can make him come off every bit a crybaby to me. He tin as well be too meek too.

The three girls are adorable and they provide the levity and light-heartedness of the evidence and that'south why they're my favorites. They're a good balance to the gloomy melodrama of Rei's life. They are also resilient, strong, caring people who are going through a difficult time too but accept each solar day as it comes and I respect that in characters.

As for the secondary characters who Rei interacts with abreast the girls, they don't actually become much development. I remember Nikaido and Kyouko getting a little development and backstory but they are still weak characters as they do not get that much backstory or character evolution equally to why they're the way they are so I couldn't sympathize or relate to them. They both but come off as arrogant, loud characters to me. So, overall, the secondary characters are weak and not compelling.

The art and animation is the most beautiful, realistic I have ever seen in anime. Shaft'south quality could rival that of Kyoani's art and animation. I practice call up the character designs in the beginning were inconsistent since some of them didn't really fit the scenery only that was cursory so that's forgivable.

Do I recommend this anime? Maybe, it's not for everyone. Information technology'southward not dandy but it was fairly decent to me. It turned out amend than I thought it would be just I do recollect that the anime should've laid off some of the melodrama it had. I would charge per unit it like a half-dozen.4./x.

2nd Season Review:

I was excited to watch this season because I kind of liked the first one and information technology may terminate upwards beingness ane of my top ten anime. I started watching bits and pieces of this ane and boy, was I disappointed. I watched up to episode 5 so kind of just wanted to give up, especially after hearing about how dramatic this season gets. Okay, here comes my problems with this flavor.

They shifted the focus of Rei'due south point of view to Hina'southward. A lot of the flavour starts focusing on Hina and her reactions to the conflicts she encounters rather than Rei's. She encounters bullying during her third year of eye schoolhouse and existence the sweetheart she is, protects a daughter named Chiho from it, who is like an associate to her. But then the bullies start bullying her. Between her classmates bullying her and her friend moving away, Hina becomes depressed and solemn. This was inconsistent to the cheerful, like shooting fish in a barrel-going, bubbly daughter she was in the first season. It'southward like the writer ran out of ideas and started to make Hina's character similar to Rei's. She starts crying excessively, she has no friends, she is going through the trauma of bullying which is what Rei's character has been through. In episode 4, she cries even during moments that weren't even requiring that sort of drama such as the ladybug scene.

They changed the tone of the Kawamoto family. In the 1st flavor, the Kawamoto family unit was supposed to represent the light-hearted, comedic part of the series and contrast with the nighttime, gloomy moments of Rei. Now information technology seems like the Kawamoto family has become more melodramatic and night like that of Rei's. I oasis't seen enough to know if Rei's life starts becoming more than comedic and light-hearted, what I do know is that he is recovering from his depression.

The bullying was actually hard and sad to lookout and I just wanted everything to be okay for Hina. I was wondering why nobody decided to dwelling-school her or take her out of school, that may non fix the pain she felt after seeing Chiho off but it could fix the whole state of affairs and the arc wouldn't accept gone on as long every bit information technology did.

Also slow for me

Anime looks similar information technology has potential, but information technology was just too slow for me and i dropped it at around the fifth episode. I didn't similar the drawing style either; everyone'due south mouth looked funny, and it was distracting. The crying, while dandy, didn't seem that neat either. Overall, information technology was meh.

I don't mean to say the anime is bad. Even in only a few episodes i was able to see the characters have some depth, and the main character develops, with all his thoughts being vocalized. There is a certain sweetness to all the characters, even the cats. I can run across at that place beingness a lot going for this serial if the cartoon style doesn't bother you lot and y'all don't listen really tedious stories. It just wasn't for me.

Sisters = good, annihilation without the sisters = wearisome

The first season of this was a 6. It was extremely dull and besides metaphysical, taking 5 minutes to get a uncomplicated point across with foreign visuals and the main guy just talking about how much he hates himself or whatever. The 2d flavour was miles above the start one, with the first half being admittedly phenomenal, more often than not because it was about hina, merely also considering it was incredibly well done. After that there is some boring shogi stuff that sucks, and so the last flake is absolutely phenomenal once more.

I dropped this later about 6 episodes, then came back after a few months and finished information technology off. I don't really know if I'm glad I did information technology yet, but at least I tin can stop wondering if I'll really like it, (spoiler alert: I didn't). There is a 100% chance that if I knew how shogi worked I would like this show a lot more, and honestly information technology sounded pretty interesting, but as someone who knows next to null nigh kanji information technology was incommunicable to tell the pieces apart, allow alone tell what was going on. If this was about chess, I bet I would have actually liked it, and I can see why someone who knows Japanese or who knows the differences between the pieces on the board would like it. Honestly the only reason this evidence gets a 7 and not something lower is but considering the first part and final four episodes of the second season was so good. Also, the music and blitheness are both phenomenal, I don't take any bug with them other than the fact that the music doesn't really fit the mood sometimes. I don't remember I would recommend this evidence, only I can run into why people liked it, even if shogi and metaphysical self-hate (for at the least the first season) aren't actually my thing. If at that place was a unmarried reason to sentinel this show it would exist momo, momo is best girl.

Understanding grapheme and humanity

Personally, this show isn't from a category I was interested in.

My score reflects how good of a slice of life this is.

The characters are washed quite well, with their intricacies of their own. No one character is 1 dimensional.

I don't commonly even scout Slice of life and I enjoyed this one, requite it a shot.
